the game of the bridge

Each year, on the last Saturday of June, the city of Pisa stops to watch the “Game of the Bridge,” an historical reenactment that takes place on the Ponte di Mezzo. The tradition of the Game of the Bridge dates back to  1568. Rival teams from different quarters of Pisa fought for symbolic possession of the bridge over the Arno River. Six magistrates for each of the two teams, representing the city districts: Tramontana (northern part, north of the Arno river) and Mezzogiorno (southern part, south of the Arno). Dressed in old armors the fighters face each other, confident in the strength of their ancient military companies  which mythological and evocative names. The goal of the game is to push a cart along two tracks towards the opponents, until the little flag set on the limit drops. At the signal of their captains, the challenge begins: the carriage is unlocked and there begins the showdown of the two contender teams, in a concentration of strength and refined technique. A match which can last from a few seconds to several minutes: the current record is 22 minutes.

Nell’ultimo sabato di giugno, ogni anno, la città di Pisa si ferma per assistere al “Gioco del Ponte”, rievocazione storica che si svolge sul Ponte di Mezzo. La tradizione del gioco del ponte risale al 1568. Squadre rivali provenienti da diversi quartieri di Pisa combattuto per il possesso simbolico del ponte sul fiume Arno. Sei magistrature per ognuno delle due squadre, in rappresentanza dei quartieri cittadini: Tramontana (parte boreale, a nord dell’Arno) e Mezzogiorno (parte australe, a sud dell’Arno). Nelle loro “armature” caratteristiche i combattenti si affrontano, forti dei propri stemmi di antiche compagnie militari pisane, dai nomi mitologici ed evocativi. Obiettivo del gioco è quello di spingere un carrello posto su due binari verso la parte avversaria fino a far cadere la bandierina di fine corsa. Al segnale dei propri Capitani, ha inizio la sfida: il carrello viene sbloccato e inizia la prova di forza dei due contendenti, in un concentrato di forza, tecnica e astuzia. Un incontro può durare da pochi secondi a diversi minuti: il record attuale è di 22 minuti.
