bani

In the north of Burkina Faso, on the border with Mali, the village of Bani is surrounded by seven hills, where seven mosques were built out of mud. Bani has become a place of prayer and pilgrimage, thanks to the prophet Mohamed Kafando. The seven mosques were built on the hills to gather the believers and since their construction Bani has turned into a remarkable place of worship. All of them are arranged in a pattern that represents the precise position of a man praying. Each mosque has a distinctive name: the setting sun, the sacrifice, the good idea, the joy, the sunrise and the pleasure. The biggest of all is called “Hands of God” and stands at the foot of the hills. Inside, the floor is made of sand. Although modest in size, the mosques look like a mirage in a desert, especially if we think that all around them, for a hundred miles, there is just a flat semi-arid plain with sparse villages. An anonymous place in the Sahel, is today one of the most interesting places of worship in the world.
