sport in the slums

It survives in one of the most terrible slums of Nairobi, where 85% of the urban population is well below the minimum threshold of poverty. It survives disease (about 40% of the population is HIV positive, here), it survives crime, and the insidious addiction of glue sniffing. It’s the Sport. In the heart of the slums there is a little free-zone; it’s the St. John Parish, managed by the heirs of father Alex Zanotelli, where the sport saves dozens of youngsters from the street. One of them is Peter, 17 yo, captain of the St John Football Club. His third-hand shoes costed him six months of work, his dream is to emulate the Kenyan star Oliech, who also comes from a shantytown and now plays football in France.Athlets of Korogocho are quite a few: many boxers, the girls of netball, those who spend their day in the gym, where the tools are nothing more than old spare parts of trucks. The reason for such training?. “To stay off the street, where we risk our life”. Hungry for victory, redemption and social success , they train for keeping alive, but their hardest efforts are spent to prevent their team mates from plunging back into drug addiction. And this is, perhaps, their greatest victory.
