peccioli eco-landfill

The world is changing; once students used to visit museums, today they go visiting landfills in order to understand how to manage waste materials. The village of Peccioli, near Pisa, boasts the most advanced waste materials disposal site in the world, according to the UN and the European Union. Brought to model in all countries, this site is a joint enterprise, where 80% of the shares are owned by the municipality and the remaining 20% by citizens who believed in the business. Not only the waste materials handled here are those of  a quarter of the Tuscan population (about one million people) but the area is completely free of smells. Exploiting the biogas, the landfill produces 2,500,000 kW h of electricity which cover the needs of more than 3,000 families. In addition, projects in collaboration with the University of Pisa are underway; a machine for molecular dissociation, which burns waste materials using very little oil (already installed and running), represents the future in terms of wastes disposal. Percolate (the liquid created by the decomposition of materials), which has always been landfills’  biggest problem from the environmental point of view, is extracted and purified and turned into pure water. Today the energy produced in Peccioli’s landfill is used to heat the homes of people with a heating system which costs them 60% less than a traditional natural gas heating system. The landfill is run by only 14 people, including central office staff and workers. In addition to receiving visits from schools Peccioli is visited by researchers, universities and entrepreneurs. In 2010, the landfill has been visited by several thousand people.
